Magazine scans for 4x04.
Oct. 18th, 2011 06:13 pmScans from Radio Times and What's On TV for this week's Merlin episode (4x04). SPOILERS, especially What's On TV whose article might as well be called The Entire Plot Condensed, and contains Colin's entry for 2011's 'Understatement of the Year' ;)

"TROUSERS DOWN TOMFOOLERY"???!?!?! I'll just... leave that one there.

I'm actually pretty excited for this one! I was hoping it would erase last week from my brain forever, but the What's On TV article suggests Arthur's attitude might not thrill me overmuch :/ We shall see! I bet the ending the Radio Times is referring to is a BABY DRAGON. Come on, it must be a baby dragon!!!! Merlin will adopt it and call it George for ironic purposes and there shall be hilarious shenanigans as he tries to hide it from Arthur and Arthur keeps finding random singed tapestries around the castle. What? I can dream of something more cheerful!

Date: 2011-10-18 05:44 pm (UTC)This episode looks quite good again. What the hell is going on with season 4. I do like the Gaius/Merlin relationship so I don't mind if we have an episode that concentrates on that. Plus with added Dragon, perfect.
Wow, Arthur's vowing to get rid of magic last week and dragons this week. He makes magical friends wherever he goes, doesn't he? Maybe he should disguise the Baby Dragon as a bunny rabbit and give it to Arthur as a pet for his belated birthday, to try and ease him back to liking magic. Although, there is the very likely risk that Arthur will eat it.
Trousers down tomfoolery...again? Not that i'm complaining! Bring it on! As long as it's not Gaius of course...

Date: 2011-10-18 05:53 pm (UTC)Plus they paid so much lip service to the fangirls it was ridiculous. What with a half naked Arthur, watersport kink now being canon, back carrying etc :D

Date: 2011-10-18 06:03 pm (UTC)There are so many aspects of it I am unhappy with, making Arthur king already, making another ridiculous and lame reason to keep the magic secret and so never change their stagnant central formula. The pointless "magic is pure evil" scene, more Merlin the Martyr. I keep thinking of all the scenes and scenarios we will never ever get now, and that I was looking forward to SO MUCH. Arthur becoming King was meant to mark the end and the beginning of a new era etc where Merlin could stand at his side and be his equal. Instead we get this. I don't know, maybe the rest of the series will redeem it, but I cannot get past the idea that Merlin is now keeping his secret out of fear of ARTHUR. That is so wrong on every level. I feel like I can't even ship them in canon anymore now, because I want Merlin to say stuff Arthur and go somewhere he can be himself and be thanked for it.
Whew - RANT OVER.
I expect I will watch it one day, just not until I am in a better frame of mind for it. The Mini Thems will of course review it nicely :)

Date: 2011-10-18 06:20 pm (UTC)I loved that they decided to take risks like that, having Arthur be king so early and Merlin still questioning his destiny.
But I think you are missing one of the best scenes they've ever done, so full of symbolism and angst, if you haven't seen the ending.
Hopefully it will get better for you.

Date: 2011-10-18 06:42 pm (UTC)I think the distance between Arthur will become both larger and smaller over the next several episodes and really bring out how much Merlin is torn between the two worlds. I'm loving that but I could see why you would be disappointed.
After the first three episodes, I'm very hopeful that it will be an amazing reveal and aftermath.
Well, if nothing else, enjoy the next one. Should be fun.
