ISLAND DVD!!!! YAY.
Aug. 6th, 2011 01:36 pmISLAND HAS ARRIVED!!!!!!
GIECAST I HAVE YOUR COPY TOO, WILL POST ASAP.
There are galleries and lots of stuff we've seen already, but I am listening to the Director's Commentary now and it is already wonderful <3
Spoilers below (will add more as I watch).
- Colin got really into the physicality of the role.
- He really enjoyed getting out and collecting 'treasure' for Colin's treasure trove himself.
- He started reading books about magic on the island, the directors say he was staying with a lady who was a white witch and she would read him spells!
- They were lucky enough to get 3 days of prep time with Natalie and Colin to work out backstory for their characters etc.
- The scene in the woodshed between Nikki and Calum was the first scene the two actors shot together. The upside down horseshoe on the wall is deliberate, to show bad luck.
- Nikki slapping Calum only took 5-6 takes so 'Colin didn't get too much of a beating'.
- The white house on the far shore in the background of the 'monastery' scene was the summer home of the famous Mitford family and quite creepy, apparently.
- Calum and Phyllis eating breakfast together is one of the directors (didn't catch which one) favourite scenes. But because Colin is a vegetarian, it was all veggie options and he ended up eating a LOT of scrambled egg.
- The woman in the post office is a local woman, Bunty McIvor (awesome name!) and she taught Colin to speak with an islander accent.
- Oooh they only had Janet as Phyllis for the first year, and so many shots are a production assistant in her costume and wig!
- In the seal girl scene, the seals were really there at the time :)
- Jane Rogers was heavily influenced by 'The Tempest', Directors see the island as an extension of Phyllis's personality.
- The dinner they all eat together was potato stew with a side of boiled potatoes because of Colin's vegetarianism!
- The scene in Calum's shack was the last one to be shot. Colin loved his shack and 'didn't want to leave', he even started rearranging things.
- The rape scene: lots of pressure on the actors, long unbroken camera shots and lots of dialogue. Both actors were wearing layers of thermals because it was so cold.
- Directors make it clear that Nikki WAS raped in the film (suggestion that this happened in the book too but I am still not sure myself). Showed how far Nikki would go. Both actors happy to have the day over with.
- There was one scene where Colin 'almost' got into a grump, because he had to wear a polo neck and pick flowers :D :D
- The reason there is a cardboard box randomly by Nikki's door in the second scene where Phyllis is pegging out washing is because they cut a scene where Calum brought her a box of vegetables (presumably as a peace offering).
- Last scene shot in a really inaccessible location (near Iona). So cold the sea was freezing in the shallows and Colin had to keep getting up between takes and jogging around the beach to keep warm.
- Both actors really anxious to get it right, worried a lot about it because it was the big redemptive final scene
THE END.
Now I must go to work :(
