Our Private Life
Feb. 26th, 2011 01:53 pmA few vague spoilers for the play!
I thought I should finally write about my trip to London! I had a really great time and was very excited to meet some fellow LJ fans. I got the train up on the Tuesday and met
opusnone in the afternoon. Meeting up turned out to be a bit of a comedy of errors because we both only had email to contact each other and managed to go back and forth for an hour, just missing each other, until we FINALLY met up in the British Museum. We spent a good few hours wandering around the exhibits and chatting about all sorts, especially the achievements of King Bibble the First and the historic meeting of Beaker and the Muppets ;) We got some dinner near Sloane Square and got to the theatre in plenty of time thank god. I was so worried my horrible dream would come true and I’d be wandering the corridors forever, unable to find the theatre.
The theatre was so tiny! We climbed a ton of narrow wooden stairs and then got to this room with the stage on the right, set up with some green trellis type panels and about 5-6 rows of padded benches on the left. They were playing Latin American music in the background and that, combined with the green panels, really took me back to the time I spent in Venezuela. That colour and design was so familiar. Anyway as I was walking along the front with Opusnone I was stopped by
rane_ab! Then we carried on up and sat down about 3 rows back. There really wasn’t a bad seat in the place, you could see the stage perfectly and so close up. I also bought a copy of the programme, which was the text of the play itself with cast lists and little write ups of past work etc (Colin's was the shortest! BUT HE HAS TIME YET).

Awwwwww
As for the play itself, I really enjoyed it. I didn’t know what to expect because I deliberately didn’t read any reviews or posts about it so I would be reasonably unspoiled. It dealt with pretty dark themes but was very funny and the audience laughed a lot. Actually it was a really great atmosphere in the theatre. What with it being so small and everyone sitting together on benches, it felt very intimate and friendly. That really suited the play too because the characters were constantly speaking ‘thoughts’ to the audience and looking out from the stage, so it almost felt as though you were directly involved in the story. It opened with Colin’s character speaking straight out to the audience which was very strange. I’ve never been to any of the promotional events to do with the show (my potential embarrassment squick is too strong) so it felt strange to be only a few feet from someone I usually see on telly or on LJ pictures and posts.
The story itself reminded me a little of An Inspector Calls in the sense that you see a family that starts out seemingly ‘respectable’ begin to unravel in the face of an unpalatable accusation. The comparison only goes so far of course, because Carlos makes it clear from the off that this is not an entirely normal family, that he’s not ‘normal’ himself. I found the characters speaking their thoughts aloud very interesting too, especially that other people could hear them and comment on them doing it. It seemed to be linked in the play to a less sophisticated village life with the mother asserting that she doesn’t think aloud anymore because she is a sophisticated woman, as well as constantly pointing out that they don’t live in a village anymore, it’s a town now because they’re building a shopping centre. So in this case ‘sophistication’ seemed to be linked with secrecy and a loss of openness, the modern town versus primitive village life, yet at the same time the character with the biggest secret – the father – is the one who chooses to reject the town and go back to the country at the end, where he can better keep and hide his dark secret.
The speaking aloud of thoughts was a great dramatic device though and led to a lot of the funny lines in the play, as did the psychiatrist who wouldn’t have been out of place in an English social comedy. I can’t really add anything to the more in depth reviews other people have already posted on LJ, but I thought Colin was fantastic. He was really the pivotal character in terms of driving all the drama and he played it so well! I think perhaps Carlos isn’t supposed to be a wholly likeable character, but at the same time I found it hard not to like him because he seems to take such awful enjoyment in what he’s doing, and half the time, he’s being more honest in his lies and ramblings and offbeat comments than the other characters. He was also a fascinating character to watch (and not just because it was Colin!). Even when other characters were speaking, it’s like you could SEE Carlos absorbing what they were saying and fitting it to his rapidly more complicated version of the past, tweaking bits when necessary but leaving you never quite sure if he had convinced himself it was all true or was just gleefully watching the mayhem unfold. After all, (and as he said several times), you couldn’t blame him, he’s a compulsive fantasist.
On a more shallow note, Colin was really tall. I mean, I knew how tall he was but in person he just seemed to go up and up. Also I loved the scene where you could see him dancing around the kitchen a bit, and all the references to his homosexuality at times felt bizarrely like fanfic had just come to life. But yes, overall I thought it was a great play, very interesting and thought provoking, I was really surprised at how quickly the whole thing seemed to go. It didn’t feel like an hour and a half.
Afterwards there was a talk by the director and three of the actors (the mother, the psychiatrist and the young boy). Colin didn’t come out, which didn’t surprise me as he seems not to like those sort of promotional things and probably wanted to sneak off home. It was interesting to hear how they went about translating the play from Spanish to English, not just the language itself but also the subtle cues that Brits will take away from accents, stage props etc. They also talked about attitudes to homosexuality in Colombia and the idea that everyone is born straight and being gay means you were somehow damaged at some point in your life. Homosexuality was a central theme of the play itself, from Carlos who was gay, to the father who constantly denied he was, to the young boy who was ‘going to be,’ even to Edgar at the grill who was in love with Carlos and was presumably giving him some sort of perks in return for sex (after all, the waiting staff get all the tips! Carlos has to get by somehow. Carlos’s explanation there was probably the part that amused me most).
Afterwards,
opusnone and I went down to the theatre bar where we met up with
rodneyscat,
rane_ab and fellow LJers (including a very nice person I was sitting next to but have obviously remembered the name wrongly because LJ doesn’t recognise it! If you see this and feel like commenting, I will add your actual name!) and
blondielox!!! and chatted about the play and Merlin in general and why we all fell in love with the show :D :D It was so strange to be chatting to all these people that normally I only know through their icon and name, my brain kept thinking “oh my god you wrote ....” or “I remember your post about...” My brain is a weird place. Obviously I didn’t say any of those things though because I am cool and collected (in my dreams).
The next day I had the whole morning free before my train so I met
rane_ab again and we went for a walk around Westminster to see the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and even Buckingham Palace, before going up to Leicester Square for lunch.

Research for Meeting the Minister.
We managed to see the changing of the guard on Horseguard’s Parade AND when we got to Buckingham Palace two carriages came out along with what looked like a royal car. I have no idea if it was the Queen, but I have decided that it WAS, and that she was cursing herself for just missing us.

Judging by their cloaks, I don't fancy their chances.
All in all, a really enjoyable two days! I was nervous about going to the play but I am glad I went now. I doubt I will ever go to a con or anything like that, but it was still lovely to see the (very tall) Colin Morgan in person and doing his thing on stage :)

Btw, have you seen this new Starz Camelot yet?? I'm downloading it now and loads of people on my flist seem to be crazy about it. I admit, I feel like I dislike the show in advance because I only love my Bradley and Colin M/A, but I might watch the pilot anyway. The chances of me slashing any other pairing in anything are 0.01% (see Sherlock/Lestrade for the .01). I suppose more Arthurian stuff is always good, right? ::holds on to fandom::

Date: 2011-02-26 05:52 pm (UTC)I haven't seen Starz Camelot yet. I'm not really sure if I'm gonna watch it. I might give it a try depending on my mood cos I do generally like anything Arthurian. Gaaah there's still so much stuff on my to-watch list.
Hmmm...my only other slash pairing is Dean/Cas from Supernatural. I'd say my love is equally distributed between them and Arthur/Merlin. *pets my lovely boys*

Date: 2011-02-26 06:03 pm (UTC)Apparently Starz Camelot is a lot darker, which makes sense but will probably be a factor in me not enjoying it like I do BBC Merlin. The humour and charm of the show was what first attracted me to it, and most of my fic has worked off the humorous aspect. I don't know how to imagine a Merlin and Arthur who aren't dorky ridiculous boys in love?!? DOES NOT COMPUTE.

Date: 2011-02-26 06:14 pm (UTC)See this is also why I hesitate to watch it. I fear that BBC Arthur and Merlin may have ruined me for other versions.

Date: 2011-02-28 01:58 pm (UTC)My road to shipping M/A sounds a lot like yours!! I started off looking for gen and canon only, but I wanted stuff that mainly focussed on those two because they were my favourite characters. Unsurprisingly most of that was a bit slashy so I thought I would dip my toe into the slash JUST A LITTLE. Then suddenly the ratings were creeping up and before I knew it I was reading NC-17 and every genre under the sun :D
I have downloaded Camelot now, but haven't got up the energy to watch it yet :/

Date: 2011-02-28 04:00 pm (UTC)Haha sounds like we both convinced ourselves that "pfft! I'm just gonna read this one thing cos it looks awesome, but I absolutely will not slash them." Then bam! Arthur and Merlin are sneaky like that haha. And not only did I manage to con myself into shipping them, I also recruited a RL friend into the fandom in the same manner. I plied her w/ gen fic and then when she was hooked I sent her A/M slash w/ the smut edited out. I knew my master plan worked when she started looking for smutty stuff on her own haha. *evil cackle*
Knowing me, I'll probably watch it. But I think I'll wait til all the eps have finished airing.

That's the trouble with trusting your diary to someone else. (Or were you referring to her cursing herself because she missed out the 20 points she'd have got if she had hit you?)
I doubt I will ever go to a con or anything like that

Date: 2011-02-26 02:52 pm (UTC)I've not come across writerconuk before! But I'll definitely check it out, thank you :) My brother always goes to the cons and goes to the Merlin panels for me. I don't know why I'm so ridiculous about it, I just get really embarrassed at the thought of people asking awkward questions, even though they're just QUESTIONS. If I ever did go I would have to take a cushion to hide behind, it's the only way.

Date: 2011-02-26 05:30 pm (UTC)I did enjoy London this time though. The last few years, everytime I've been has been to go to the National Archives and do loads of research. It was so nice to be going there just to enjoy myself.
I can never seem to resist captioning pictures. I blame my Sassy Pose fic, if it wasn't for those hilariously bad illustrations I would never have felt the need to keep giving my own spin on things :D

Date: 2011-02-26 05:50 pm (UTC)AHAHA SO TRUE.
How tall is Colin, would you say? I have heard 6'1", and also 5'10". Either way he probably looks even taller because of his leanness. To me, 5'10" would seem pretty normal...so maybe it is the former? INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW.
Anyway, great report! I have to admit, when I learned the background of Colin's character, I thought "sounds like a fic" too! Does the play take place in a modern day setting, or is it unclear?
no subject
Date: 2011-02-26 05:58 pm (UTC)I was really surprised by the background of the character because I know there has been lots of fandom debate about whether past characters were really meant to be gay or not. And then here's Carlos 100% definitely gay, with people making comments about it throughout, saying he has been having wet dreams about Brad Pitt and that he should get a boyfriend, and then right at the end that he's been having sex with his manager, Edgar, at the place where he works.
It's definitely meant to be modern, the mother mentions that they've just got the internet (there is some suggestion Carlos will be using it to watch gay porn), but the set was very 1980s looking - I'm guessing that was more to do with the village and the family only just starting to modernise :)

Date: 2011-02-26 07:21 pm (UTC)I have to admit I'm more of a comedy person when I go to the theatre. I saw Spamalot a couple weeks ago and I still smile thinking about it :D. Part of my immense enjoyment was that although I'm familiar with the famous quotes and sequences, I've never particularly liked the Monty Python films so most of it was all wonderfully new and very, very funny. The other part of it was that there were quite a few moments of lost composure, particularly from Phil Jupitus who was playing Arthur and that really got the audience roaring :D :D. I also loved the Lancelot/Herbert romance and I was sitting there wondering if there was fanfic for them, lol! I haven't looked, which I think is best! :)
My favourite play from the last year was a comedy from a little company and it was called 'The Great British Country Fete' (I think). It was about Tesco (yes, they got away with using the name, there was even a repeatedly used Tesco theme song :D) and they were trying to buy up and build on land in a tiny village. It had this hilarious array of oddball characters that you might associate with outdated country perceptions. There was a xenophobic old lady obsessed with jam, the extremely flamboyant son of the main character who was opposing the plans, who couldn't see his son was fabulously gay and a yuppie couple who were 'milking' their goat, NOT in the right way and even worse, selling the milk to the local school \0/. God. I'm laughing just remembering! It was just so good. Sorry, I've totally derailed my response!
I share your aversion to conventions and such. Although I did go to Expo 2009 on a whim, my first and only con experience. I don't think I'd go again, even though it was good fun. I was determined to film parts of the panel as I like watching con videos, so those are nice, tangible memories. Bradley was filming the audience in turn and I wish we'd seen some of that footage along with his commentary of the day :(. I got their autographs but they were sitting down so I didn't get the tall!Colin effect (I'm 5 8" and I agree that he would probably still look super tall next to me due to his leaness!). I did just stand in front of him and find myself unable to say anything and blushing furiously, even though I thought that would happen with Bradley. But Bradley just started talking so that was easy. God, I was shaking. The first thing Bradley said was that I looked a bit like his sister, the first we'd ever heard of him having a sister, so I contributed some knowledge to fandom! *is super nerdy and sad* :P
Alas, the Queen missed out on a delightful afternoon of tea with you. Her loss! Maybe if more than official announcements were written on her facebook then you could have bumped into her properly! "The Queen is: about to leave the palace, anyone up for Wetherspoons?".
Back to the how tall is Colin question, official sources do seem to support the 6 1" figure. I refer you the old yet fun discussion that was had at
Have one of my favourite Bradley faces! He has a brilliant laugh and I like the way his eyes crinkle at the corners and of course the way he throws his head back and laughs with his whole body:
It's been awhile since I've written a super long comment, long overdue I think ;). I hope you figure out your missing persons name!

Date: 2011-02-28 01:19 pm (UTC)I haven’t seen Spamalot, is Phill Jupitus good as King Arthur? Does he sing?? I have to admit I am a BIG Monty Python fan, my dad was always watching the films and TV series when I was growing up and my favourite comedy sketch ever ever has to be the Constitutional Peasants from Holy Grail :D
I’ve not heard of The Great British Country Fete either but it sounds very funny!! I don’t see half as many plays as I should, I always enjoy them when I go but somehow I don’t get around to it very often. When I was in London a few years back I saw a 1940s play that was hilarious. It was one of those wartime farces with a vicars and RAF men running about and mistaken identities everywhere. My friend and I got tickets last minute and it was a really fun afternoon. I’m going to see Much Ado About Nothing in June though, with Catherine Tate and David Tennant, which I’m really excited about. It’s my favourite Shakespeare play.
Although I did go to Expo 2009 on a whim, my first and only con experience.
That sounds like an amazing one and only con experience!! It’s not that I wouldn’t want to ever meet them, just that I would probably say something stupid, and I would be worried someone next to me would scream at them all the time. Yes, I do worry about silly things. I was actually relieved that the night I saw Colin’s play was a night we couldn’t wait at the stage door (or rather we could have, but he would have been long gone). I just got the nice experience of the play, with no potential for humiliating myself afterwards, or holding him up when he probably wanted to get on home and rest or whatever. Your meeting sounds perfect though, AND you look like Bradley’s sister! That’s so much more exciting than “thanks for coming” or other usual responses. The cast always seem so friendly :)
The Queen was totally upset to have missed me! Last summer she came all the way to North Wales and came to my university town when I was in the next town over in the archives. Then in the afternoon she came to Caernarfon (where the archives were) and I had gone back to Bangor. She went out of her way to accommodate me and still we could not get it to work out One day! One day, we will have tea and scones. Or possibly a Wetherspoons (mmmmm WAFFLES WITH CHOCOLATE SAUCE).

I have no idea if it was the Queen, but I have decided that it WAS, and that she was cursing herself for just missing us.
Oooh! I did actually get to see the Queen in person when she came to Canada in July for Canada Day. I was pretty excited, but I think I only got to see her lovely hat when she walked past me on the royal red carpet. I did get a few good shots of her from the stage, though.
Thanks for writing the review! So happy that you got to see him in person and performing! :D

Aren't Prince William and Kate Middleton coming to Canada for their first official visit??? I'm sure I read that somewhere :D
I'm really happy I got to see him (Colin, not P.William). I'm not usually brave enough to do these things so I'm glad I bit the bullet this time and WENT. Here's to hoping he does many more plays!

Date: 2011-02-27 01:33 pm (UTC)I'd put Colin at the 6' - 6'1" mark, but sadly at about 1"-2" wide (except, some how miraculously fro his eyes which seem larger then any other part of him.)
It was lovely meeting everyone, and it was a shame you and the Queen couldn't hook up - maybe next time.

Date: 2011-02-28 01:37 pm (UTC)He really was much skinnier than expected! That's probably what's making him seem so tall, as well as actually being, you know, TALL. He just keeps going. It's lucky I'm not a critic for the newspapers because my review would mostly be about "the TALL Colin Morgan" loping across the stage.
Me and the Queen are definitely hooking up next time. She's providing the tea, I'm bringing the custard creams :D :D

It was so strange to be chatting to all these people that normally I only know through their icon and name, my brain kept thinking “oh my god you wrote ....” or “I remember your post about...” My brain is a weird place. It was lovely to meet you!

Date: 2011-02-28 01:51 pm (UTC)Haha now I see where I went wrong. I remembered the beginning of your name as GOLDIE, not Blondie. Apparently I have some sort of subconscious Three Bears fixation. I was typing it in and LJ kept giving me back strikethrough. I think I must have heard the 'lox' bit and just connected it to Goldilocks in my head, never mind.
Anyway, thank you for commenting and clearing that up! It was lovely to meet you too :) You're going again aren't you? Or have you been?? If I lived in London I would definitely be eyeing the Monday tickets, if only so I could better assess the tallness of Colin (it's for Science, you know).
I did manage to meet Rane ok, so thanks for that. When I got to Westminster there seemed to be about a million exits (typical), but I found the one facing Westminster and kind of lurked there getting funny looks from people until she came long. I was relieved! It's amazing how quickly we've all got used to having phones at all times, and it was so strange waiting for someone with no way of contacting them at all.
Anyway, I am going to go and edit my post now! Thanks so much for commenting and letting me know the correct name, hopefully now I know it I will see you about more :) :)

Date: 2011-02-28 05:58 pm (UTC)Lol yus, I assume the 'Goldielocks' thing was how how my brother came up with what he used to call me, seeing as I used to have platinum blonde hair. Just to mess with the system. XD It was the only nickname anyone ever gave me, so I thought it quite apt when I joined lj.
Hellzyeah I'm going again! Sadly not tonight, as I have had no sleep since yesterday as I was doing an essay that was due in this morning. I spent most of yesterday better assessing Colin's facial expressions in season three. For Science. Wrong type of science for me, unfortunately. There are still tickets available for tonight! But... I am that tired that not even Colin can drag me from my room. What is the world coming to?? Nearly two hours there and back... Next Monday, though, I am definitely there. I shall be up and in front of my laptop at 9am waiting for the button to go back to 'booking'.
Ah, good! That's what I was worried about... so many chances for a near miss...
...Research go well, did it?? *did not try reading that photo of your word.doc you posted of the sequel. at all* =D

Date: 2011-03-01 10:28 am (UTC)I refuse to believe you are being entirely honest on that point. NOT EVEN COLIN HIMSELF???! What if he brought cake and a pillow so you could nap before the play started??
Colin does do amazing facial expressions. As does Bradley. In fact you could probably watch episodes on mute and still enjoy their perfomances :) I am endlessly amused by some of the brilliant expressions people capture in their LJ icons. I have a particular love of pouty Arthur when he's watching Merlin sharpen his sword and he's sulking because he has to let his father win the tournament.
I'm so envious of you getting to go again! I've been looking up details of Colin's film, 'Island', to see when it's coming out, apparently it's coming to Bristol for a special screening at some point, so maybe I will go to that. It's not the same as seeing him in person, but still.
:D My research went very well, thank you. Actually I should really have been taking a picture of Downing Street, but Rane and I managed to walk straight past it without noticing.
I really didn't think anyone would try to read the word doc in the background when I posted that pic .

Date: 2011-03-01 06:50 pm (UTC)I was utterly exhausted though - slept straight through until 20 past 1 today. I had lectures at 9. Whoops. Apparently they were pointless, but still... So if I had gone last night I probably would still be asleep RN.
Ah Island!! Can't wait! Have you read the book?? I'm going home for the Easter holidays, but I have to come back to uni for exams the week it comes out at the cinema. I was gonna go see it with my friend (who is also a Merlin fangirl) back home, but apparently not. D= Unless my exams start quite late on... In that case yay!! And then there's Parked. Cathal! And Fred! Gonna cry so hard at that movie, I know it...
=) ahaha we are sneaky, sneaky fangirls. \o/ Big word counts are good!!
