Summary: Merlin and Arthur have never hugged. Morgana and Gwen decide to do something about that. Futurefic.
A/N: For
capricornucopia and
giecast who listened to my podfic attempt at this one and liked it :D The fic was written ages ago, after episode 2x07 and the infamous Non Hug, and had been hanging around my hard drive ever since. Not a terribly serious fic ;) but there you go!
It had become a running joke now that Arthur and Merlin had never hugged.
They had saved each other’s lives plenty of times. They had argued loudly enough to alert half the castle. They had bickered and teased each other, and celebrated together and planned and schemed when necessary. But they had never hugged.
And frankly, Morgana and Gwen had had enough.
“What is wrong with you?” demanded Morgana, cornering the King in the council chamber the day after Merlin and Arthur’s latest rather spectacular adventure, “He’s your best friend!”
King Arthur looked a little ill at the very idea. “He is not my ‘best friend’ Morgana, don’t be ridiculous.”
Morgana tutted and stole the sheaf of papers the King was pretending to be engrossed in. “Is that so? What would you call him then?”
Arthur glared and folded his arms, “He’s my…” he began, and then stopped.
Morgana raised one perfect eyebrow. “He’s your...?”
“Merlin. He’s just—”
“He’s your Merlin?” interrupted Morgana with a smirk.
Arthur tried to look regal, which was proving difficult with a red face, “Do shut up, Morgana.” He stole back the sheaf of papers, and spread them out on the table, turning up the regal expression another notch and adding, “Anyway, we’re men.”
Morgana waited to be enlightened.
Arthur rolled his eyes. “We’re men, Morgana. Men don’t do that sort of thing.”
“Ah, I see.” said Morgana, tapping one finger against her lips as if in thought. Arthur nodded, glad they’d got that cleared up, and turned back to his papers. “I suppose I have only seen Merlin and Lancelot hugging those three times. And he and Gawain, after Gawain won that tournament and—” she stopped, and shook her head with a breezy smile, “But it all makes sense now. What would I do without you here to explain these things to me, Arthur?”
And she promptly swept from the room, leaving Arthur feeling more than a little discomfited.
In the sunny room at the top of the North Tower, Gwen was taking the more subtle approach.
“So… you and Arthur?”
Merlin stopped stirring the thick green liquid in the cauldron, that smelled strongly of cabbage, and looked up, confused. “Me and Arthur what?”
“Just… you know,” Gwen waved a hand, but evidently Merlin did not know, “You seemed, er, happy yesterday, when you defeated that giant… thing. With the… teeth.” Merlin blinked at her. “I mean,” Gwen hurried on, “Not that anyone wouldn’t have been happy to defeat it! I’m sure we were all happy. That you defeated it I mean.”
“Gwen, are you all right?” said Merlin, taking the cauldron entirely off the heat now, so as to better peer at her in concern.
“I’m fine,” said Gwen brightly, then gave in, sighed and plonked herself down at Merlin’s worktable. This was a lot more complicated than it had sounded in Morgana’s chambers. “Merlin, you need to hug Arthur.”
Merlin paled, “What? Why? Has he been cursed again?”
“Er… yes,” said Gwen, sensing a way out. “It’s a terrible… affliction of the…” Merlin’s eyes widened and Gwen felt a little guilty. But it was all for the greater good after all. “Brain,” she finished, firmly.
“Of the brain?” gasped Merlin.
“Yes,” said Gwen, and crossed her fingers behind her back. “You should hurry.”
But Merlin was already gone.
Arthur was in the entrance hall and he was deep in thought. He had never worried too much about this hugging business before. A friendly clap on the shoulder. A bump against the arm. All these things were perfectly acceptable. But a hug? That was a little…well… Arthur had just never really thought of it before. But apparently Merlin had. Apparently Merlin had been running around the castle, hugging anyone who happened to cross his path! But did he ever hug Arthur? No he did not! Not that Arthur wanted Merlin to hug him. But it was very likely Merlin did, since he seemed to enjoy that sort of thing. And never let it be said that Arthur didn’t know to keep on the right side of the most powerful sorcerer in Albion. Of course actually doing it would be more of a problem. Arthur wondered if he should try for an arm around the shoulder first? Something manly and not too obvious. Should it be a one arm hug? Both arms seemed a little much for a comradely hug between King and Subject after all.
He was just considering the length of the intended hug (how long was too long?) when Merlin himself came barrelling around the corner, yelled “Arthur!” with what seemed like quite unwarranted panic and then, before Arthur could manage more than “Merlin, what—” had thrown himself into his arms with all the melodrama of a court player, winding his arms around his neck like he hoped to cut off his air supply. Arthur staggered back under the weight, knocking over a side table and smashing a priceless but rather hideous vase in the process. The action seemed to dislodge Merlin slightly, enough to breathe at least.
“Merlin, what the hell are you doing?” he managed, his hand coming up – quite of its own accord – to fist in the worn fabric of Merlin’s jacket.
“Saving you!” said Merlin, his voice slightly muffled by Arthur’s tunic. And, all right, it seemed a little over-dramatic to Arthur, but then he should have known Merlin would be completely ridiculous about this sort of thing.
“Look Merlin, I don’t know what Morgana told you but—”
“Morgana?” said Merlin, pulling back slightly, enough that Arthur’s hands slid down to his waist and he could see Merlin’s eyes, huge and slightly out of focus, closer than he’d ever seen them before.
“She seems to think we ought to be…” he floundered a little, “er, spending more time together.” Merlin looked confused. “Isn’t that what she told you?”
“No, you’ve been cursed,” said Merlin, arms tightening around Arthur’s neck.
“I’ve been what?” said Arthur at once.
“Cursed,” said Merlin.
“Have I?”
“Haven’t you?”
“Hang on,” said Arthur, feeling a headache coming on, the strange smell of cabbages wasn’t helping. “Who told you that?”
“Gwen told me that you were cursed with a terrible affliction of the brain!”
Arthur snorted, “And you attacked me because?”
“I’m not attacking you you prat, I’m hugging you!”
“Well, that’s all very touching Merlin, and I’m sure you’ll miss me terribly, but wouldn’t a cure be more use?”
Merlin shook his head in irritation and Arthur could feel the soft hair brushing at the side of his face. “This is the cure!”
There was a short silence. “Right,” said Arthur at last. “And Guinevere told you this did she?”
“Yes?” said Merlin, sounding more uncertain now. His arms loosened slightly.
“Morgana’s ex-maid, Guinevere?”
Merlin pulled back completely. Arthur refused to miss the warmth, or the smell of cabbages. “Oh,” he said in a small voice.
“Yes, Oh, Merlin.”
“So you’re not cursed then?”
“Apparently not,” said Arthur, “Fortunately for the kingdom the deadly hug monster is still at bay.”
Merlin managed a rather weak glare, red from the tips of his ears to the laces of his tunic. “I was just making sure,” he muttered, straightening his jacket where it had nearly fallen off in his headlong rush. He stared at his hands for a few moments and then said, “Well, I suppose I’d better get back to—”
It was then that Arthur pulled him forward into a hug. One armed. Not too long (just long enough) and very manly (in his opinion). “Idiot,” he said, into Merlin’s ridiculously soft hair and he felt Merlin’s smile against his neck.
Then he let him go, because they were in the middle of the entrance hall after all, and cleared his throat. “Go on then, I do have a kingdom to run, you know.”
Merlin smiled at him, a little shyly, and fixed the ugly vase with a wave of his hand before he left – much to Arthur’s disappointment.
Left alone, Arthur thought about the whole hugging business for a second, and decided that it wasn’t so bad, really. Not once you got used to it. It was even… nice, he would admit, if pressed. Not that he wanted to start hugging just anybody, of course. But Merlin was probably all right, as long as he didn’t want to do that sort of thing all the time. At least not all the time in public, anyway. He nodded to himself, glad that was all sorted, and set off for the council chamber and his Kingly Business.
Hidden in the shadows of the staircase Morgana and Gwen grinned at each other, hugged in celebration (both arms, and they didn’t care how long) and began planning their next move.
The End.

Date: 2010-04-23 03:39 pm (UTC)I like to imagine Gwen and Morgana have a few more tricks up their sleeves yet... Not sure if I will get to write about it as my fanfic is taking a back seat for a while while I catch up on uni work :(
Also, I've just realised you friended me and I didn't friend back!! Sorry about that, I often check my emails on my phone and LJ is hard to access from there so sometimes I read LJ messages, mean to reply later, and then forget. Friended you back now! Thanks for the comment :)

Date: 2010-04-18 10:16 pm (UTC)I'm so glad they got to hug!! Arthur being not-jealous with all the other people who get to hug Merlin and Merlin being "I have to hug him to save him!" You know, Gwen isn't exactly wrong about Arthur having an affliction of the brain. ;D And I love the bit about Arthur thinking 'Well, this is all right, as long as it's Merlin and not in public. And just Merlin.' And awww, the Morgana/Gwen hug at the end!
There's so much I love about this fic. It's adorable and I think you've captured their voices perfectly. ♥

Date: 2010-04-23 03:50 pm (UTC)Of course Arthur isn't jealous ;) it's just, you know, Merlin is HIS manservant, and it doesn't do for the Prince's manservant to go round hugging just ANYONE. Standards have to be maintained. Or something. At least now he knows he can probably fulfil Merlin's hug needs all by himself. Just as long as it's in private of course. It's all for Merlin's own good. Or that's what he's telling himself. Fortunately, I think Gwen and Morgana have other plans...
Thanks so much for both your comments on this one!!! Much appreciated, as always :)

Date: 2010-04-23 03:52 pm (UTC)Sadly hugs weren't included in Arthur's princely upbringing so it's something he's had to work out all on his own -it might take a while... Fortunately Merlin's a perfectly good test subject :D

Date: 2010-04-19 02:51 am (UTC)I loooove this story! I wanted them to hug in the show so so much. Blasted writers! Teasing us like that. The whole set up is perfect. W/ Morgana and Gwen teaming up to get Arthur & Merlin to hug. Arthur being jealous of all the other guys Merlin has supposedly hugged. Merlin automatically thinking that Arthur got cursed (again!). But the part that killed me was Arthur telling himself that Merlin must want to hug him and then thinking about how to do it, how long, etc. and then afterwards thinking that hugging is ok as long as it's Merlin. *pets silly Arthur*
This had me grinning the whole time. I said it already but I wanna repeat: it's brilliant! *squishes you*

Date: 2010-04-23 03:57 pm (UTC)I just hope we get a hug in series three. Just a little one will do... I know the nuggie was nice and all, but a hug would be better! I like to think Arthur would approach the Hug with the same degree of professionalism, forward-planning and long-sufferance with which he approaches all his Princely Duties. Obviously in the spirit of Self Improvement, a lot more practice will be needed, but Merlin is happy to do his duty for King and Country ;)
Thanks so much for your lovely comments!!

Date: 2010-04-23 05:00 pm (UTC)Me too! Me too! Angsty hug, comfort hug, jokey hug - I don't care as long as there is Hug. I need it in my life. Like air! Heh Arthur probably would plan it in advance, and then revise and amend as he sees fit. To fit the circumstances y'know. He is, after all, a brilliant strategist (or so he likes to think...Merlin just thinks he's mad).

Date: 2010-04-23 06:02 pm (UTC)I think that if Gwen and Morgana can hug, and Arthur and Gwen, and even Gwen and Merlin, then DAMN IT, SO CAN ARTHUR AND MERLIN. They have the most reason to, what with everything they've been through together!
I think Arthur would keep a little bit of parchment in his room somewhere where he keeps track of his Hug Strategy ;)

Date: 2010-04-23 06:15 pm (UTC)Huh I didn't even realize that til you pointed it out. Everyone else has hugged except Arthur and Merlin. WHY, WRITERS, WHY?! And it's not even that much of a stretch. Arthur's already handsy w/ Merlin as it is.
Oh god, a parchment w/ the Hug Strategy! Merlin will be very confused if he ever chances upon it.

Date: 2010-04-24 08:19 am (UTC)LOVE how Arthur was emphasizing the manliness of his (one-armed) hug, and how he walked off still in denial. (Though no worries! Morgana and Gwen are on the case already! XDD) Merlin, though being the kickass strong wizard/sorcerer/magic-person that his is, still falls for the things that Gwen and Morgana make up. "Cursed with a terrible affliction of the brain" indeed! My dear, it's called DENIAL. Not just a river in Egypt. *snickers*
Love how Merlin runs off to the rescue, and how he simply flings himself at Arthur. That was a much appreciated mental image, that. ;D

Next plan: Instigate hand holding and/or bed sharing. Maybe both.

Date: 2010-07-17 07:56 pm (UTC)I understand completely, which is why I always leave all of the scheming to the pros.
Ha! I can totally see the girls planning things out like that, including the wait time between each plan in case the other fails...which there is always a fair chance because the two boys are just so emotionally stunted. XDD But then again, I'm not too sure if the girls can be caught out if they initiate two plans too closely together. One, the boys are dense as stated previously, and two, Gwen and Morgana could so find a distraction to change the course of the conversation if they feel that it's getting towards dangerous grounds. But wait! In the end, when the boys do catch on, I can SO see Morgana being quite smug and totally rubbing it in Arthur's face that it's because of her and Gwen that Arthur and Merlin finally get together. *cackles*
*cough* Sorry, you can tell I spend a lot of time thinking about this, huh? ^^;;

I think a proper hug is second on my Want List after a magic reveal. I think they NEED it, and it would be so adorable, with them both being a little awkward but at the same time really wanting to go for it, and there would probably be a few back slaps - just to show that they're manly and all that ;) Even if we never get the reveal in the show, I demand a hug dammit!
Anyway thank you so much for your comment! And apologies for the horribly belated reply.

Date: 2010-07-17 08:12 pm (UTC)Yes....your list and my list are essentially the exact same:
1. Magic reveal
2. Real M/A hug; preferably some really emotional or h/c moment, but I'm not too picky ;)
If only either of these things would happen...
Anyway, the plus side with getting a comment reply so late is that I get to be reminded of the awesomness of this fic once more, and read it again :D. Damn I wish I'd remembered about this when voting for the recent slash awards. But anywho....carry on *grins* :D
