London and Fast Girls
May. 19th, 2012 10:06 pmI’ve had such a lovely day today! I went to London to meet up with my friend Joanne (we met on our very first day as undergraduates), had a delicious dinner and loooong chat, then got to meet up with
seenthewoods too before we went off to see ‘Fast Girls’, Bradley’s new film, in a gorgeous old cinema in Notting Hill Gate.
Spoilers ahoy for the film!
I enjoyed it. It was very funny in places, fast paced and uplifting. It wasn’t as good as Bend It Like Beckham, although there were a lot of similarities in the plot so comparisons are easy to make (the clash of cultures, rivalry, both girls want the male love interest, the new girl gets him etc). I would say Bend It Like Beckham does it with a lot more depth though, I would have liked this film to flesh out the characters more.
Lenora Critchlow was really great as Shania, but I love her anyway, and the other girls in the team were really fun, as was Noel Clarke as their manager and Phil Davis (and his dog Linford!) as the local shopkeeper who helped Shania train. It’s a great film to play Six Degrees of Separation to, there was Lenora (Being Human and Doctor Who), Rupert Graves (Doctor Who, Sherlock), Phil Davis (Doctor Who, Sherlock, Merlin), Tiana Benjamin (Angelina Johnson in Harry Potter), the list goes on!
Bradley turned up early on and was in it quite a lot, although he didn’t really have that much to do apart from look stoic and attractive and give pep talks and occasional massages. He got the chance to show his brilliant comic timing though and some adorable awkwardness :D Joanne and I did start to wonder at one point if he and Shania had some sort of homing beacon tuned to each other. If Shania wanders outside at night, all sad, oh look there’s Carl sitting alone on a bench so they can talk and bond! If Shania’s sitting alone in the arena at night, HERE COMES CARL FOR BONDING TIME. I’m not sure Carl ever went home. Talking of home, did Shania have some sort of job? I don’t know, it didn’t really say what she did apart from train for running every morning, but I might have missed that part.
There also needs to be a special shout out for Bradley’s lumberjack outfit. He turned up (when Shania was sitting alone at the arena) wearing jeans, a dark t shirt, an open plaid shirt over the top and what looked horrifyingly like a leather dad-jacket. I distinctly remember seeing ‘costume designers’ in the credits. I JUDGE YOU, COSTUME DESIGNERS, that did not make him look good.
I did love the bit when he came over after a race, quickly leaned down to Shania and told her that was ‘smashing’ (I think that was the word) and looked so adorably proud of her <3 I wish their relationship had had more development to it (Bradley seems cursed in that department) because it had the potential to be even cuter than it was.
Overall a good, fun, film, that will probably make you feel horribly unfit whilst simultaneously wishing you looked that good running in your underwear.
