Dear Flist,

Can we talk for a moment about all consuming teenage adoration of bands/singers. I have just re-discovered this in the drawer under my bed (under a special Doctor Who edition of Radio Times from 2005 and a much older book about Prince William with over '100 Full Colour Photos').

This, people, is a project book tastefully decorated by myself and LAMINATED (oh yes, don't think I didn't buy special laminating sheets from W.H.Smiths because I did) and filled with interviews and posters about the band 'Hanson' from such long defunct magazines as Smash Hits, TV Hits, Bliss and Top of the Pops Magazine. When the clippings were too small, I have artfully cut them out and glued them to some top quality white cardboard and put it in there anyway. I did this with posters and clippings of Leonardo DiCaprio too, except I displayed those over the entirety of the left hand side of my bedroom, even the little teeny clips.

Who were you really into in your teenage years?? I would be intrigued to know if anyone else kept a laminated project book :D

ps. Was Hanson's song 'I Will Come To You' about Jesus? Because I'm listening to it now and wondering O_O

pps. Have some Mmmbop on your Friday night.

I hate to say it, but I fangirl way harder now than I did when I was a kid. I am in fact now fully grown into a parody of a 13-year old girl. I was much, much cooler when I was in high school. Ah, life. The irony.

I think I fangirl in a different way now, because fandom has given me more of an outlet for my obsessions :D Now I get to make fanvideos and write fic and tweet and tumblr about everything. Then it was just me and my friends at school and what we read in magazines. No such thing as the internet! I've always been someone who will get REALLY REALLY into things though, even if it doesn't always last.

Yeah, there really was no outlet for the kind of frenetic thing that comprises my current life. Back then all you could do is keep staring at the poster on your wall. There was little in the way of new stimulation to feed the obsession.

Instead, I read real novels. LOL I also had taste in music that might be considered "cool." Yesterday, in contrast, I downloaded a couple of 1D songs.

Do you ever wonder what you would have been like as a teenage fan if you'd had all the internet resources and social networking etc that we have now back then?? I do!

I think I would have been a complete mess (aka, like I am now). I'm not sure I would have gotten far in life, tbh! Thank gods it wasn't around!

I think I wouldn't have done half so well at school! I would have been too distracted :D

haha this is exactly my problem... I had the internet at home all through high school, but it wasn't until Merlin aired that I, well, drowned in fandom. SO MUCH TO DO. So little time. (She says on lj when she still has loads of revision to do)

Like you, I was way too cool to fangirl anything when I was that young. I was reading scifi/fantasy so I could talk to real live geeky boys (and look where that got me...;)).

I think I'm trying to fill in some blanks now.

Yes, this. As a kid, I was way too cool and mature for whatever teen obsession was going around. Now, I have 1D icons, apparently. >.

Oh, man, HANSON! I was pretty much in love with Zac when I was in 11. I had pictures of them, Spice Girls, Leonardo DiCaprio, JTT, Backstreet Boys, and NSync as 'wallpaper' in my bedroom. The pictures covered nearly every visible spot on the walls.

And I also wrote I ♥ Hanson all over my dresser, bed, closet and bedroom door, in the corners of the wall... Some of the writings are still there, 15 years later because my mom hasn't had a chance to repaint that room yet, haha.

No laminated project book, sadly.

I was a Taylor girl all the way!

And I think writing I <3 Hanson everywhere definitely beats a laminated book. My friend did that for Take That, she had her dad paint the Take That symbol on her walls - unfortunately she turned into a Backstreet Boys fan a year later and had to cover them over with posters!!!

Is JTT Jonathan Taylor Thomas (is that his name? I am getting a vague memory here...)

Yeah, Jonathan Taylor Thomas! You know I heard that he hated the nickname JTT? I felt like my whole life was a lie when I heard that lol

Bobby Sherman, OMG!!! I STILL own the vinyl record of his Greatest Hits, and just recently bought the dvd set for s-1 of his series "Here come the Brides!" Oh, Bobby Sherman, be still my heart! Even now I fangirl shows, only a bit more realistically. For example, I have all the Merlin eps on DVD, and have the hardback Merlin books--had to get them when we were in London because they weren't available here until recently.

just a bit more info, the 3 brothers in HCtB were Jason, Joshua and Jeremy (I have 4 boys and Jim hated the name Jason so the older two are Joshua and Jeremy ;)

I am watching him on youtube! Woah that is some serious screaming :D :D :D

Is that a particular song of his you would recommend?

Well, my favorites are Seattle, that's the title song from the series Here come the brides and Hey Mr Sun... but I also liked Easy Come Easy Go and Julie do ya love me I think his biggest hit is Little Woman (doesn't do much for me now, but to a 13 yr old was sooooo romantic ;) Yea, teenyboppers can take out the eardrums alright.

I was into the Backstreet Boys when I was a teenager. I still like their music. I liked distinguishing their voices so I knew who was singing what line. I was pretty good at spotting that...probably not so much now. It was great to go to one of their concerts some years ago. I have their CDs and other merchandise including a big photo book that's a bit problematic to store. :p

My friend was OBSESSED with the Backstreet Boys! Actually, I think we had a bit of a rivalry going over who was best - BSB or Hanson (I always said Hanson of course!).

From: [identity profile] dk323.livejournal.com
My friend and I both shared the BSB obsession. ;) Those were the days. There was a rivalry between BSB and 'N Sync fans since BSB and 'N Sync were the big boybands. Hanson didn't seem as popular here or I just wasn't that interested in them compared to BSB. But I can see the appeal of Hanson.

I remember 'N Sync being called 'N Stink or 'N Suck by BSB fans...oh boy. Such competition. :p

I used to get Sugar every month and Bliss if I could afford it! But only once I was about 14, mum wouldn't let me have them before that and I had to read my friend's. To be fair, I was spending my money on Horse and Pony Magazine (fortnightly photo stories - WHOSE BEEN STEALING FROM THE PONY CLUB? etc)

I think my grandest passion during my teen years, barring the gay priest I had a mad crush on *g*, was Pierce Brosnan. Just think of him as the Colin Morgan of the Eighties. *g*

He was James Bond wasn't he?? And in Mrs Doubtfire as the slimy boyfriend??

I remember him! Haven't seen him in anything for a while though :(

Yes! he was Bond for a while. I first saw him in Remington Steele in the '80s; he was pale, slim, and exceedingly well tailored, and he ran like a girl. I adored him.

Me too! Mostly their Middle of Nowhere and second album (can't remember the name of it now - Second Time Around?). Every Christmas without fail I also listen to their BRILLIANT Christmas album. I love that album!

This Time Around. :D I don't have their Christmas album, though, just the first two. And none of the later ones. XD

The only Hanson song I know is Mmmm Bop. Have you seen what they look like now?? Soooo different.

When I was in high school, I had the biggest crush on Jonathan Brandis. My binder was filled with his pictures. I was really sad when I found out that he committed suicide. =((

I believe Taylor Hanson has about 6 kids now, doesn;t he? And Zac looks so different, I can't believe he was the little cute one!

I adored Jonathan Brandis! SEAQUEST DSV. He had that dolphin that he could talk to. My friend Rachael had all the Seaquests on dvd and we used to watch them at uni and swoon at how lovely Jonathan Brandis used to be. That was such a great show and so sad what happened to him later :(

My teenage years were spent enthralled with the Backstreet Boys and I'm not ashamed to admit I wrote BSB fanfiction, and was quite well known in that fandom as "Bria." (A name I picked because I liked Bria from the Star Wars novels and it was close to Brian Littrell's name. Somehow, the name stuck all these years later.) I AM ashamed to admit that at least one of my stories has been deemed a "classic" and has been preserved for some god forsaken reason. I will tell people this exists, but not WHERE. Most of my stories were sci-fi or fantasy AU's though so my Star Wars geekerie got in.

I'm also not ashamed to admit I still buy BSB cds and am contemplating on if I can spend the money to go see them when they come through my area next.

I will say my strongest memory of Hanson was this girl who sat behind me in Spanish class who had 8 different Hanson shirts and wore one each day. We would get those same magazines you mentioned and trade BSB and Hanson pictures and would bicker about one we bought together about who gets the page with Zac on one side and Nick and Brian on the other. (A second magazine was always purchased.) But mostly I remember a BSB shirt I used to wear with them on the back and she didn't want to see BSB looking at her so she would stand up her binder to look at Hanson instead and the entire Spanish class would be spent with me getting hit by said binder as it kept falling down.

So yes, it's good to know I'm not alone.

Not going to lie - I just googled you :D Sadly all the sites I could find weren't active, so I am DENIED your BSB fanfic!

God knows what I would have been like if I'd known about fanfic then. As it was, me and my best friend had this EPIC fic going on my old Amiga computer, where we basically met all our favourite stars. It was the most self-insert Mary-Sueish fanfic of all time, but we loved it and spent hours crafting it. Sadly I can't play the discs anymore so it is lost forever now :(

I love your Spanish class story :D That sounds scarily like something I would have done!

I semi blame you for me almost being late to work today. I put on my "90's pop" playlist and I almost missed the bus because I was dancing to "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" in my room. ("MMM Bop" is on that list, and so is "I will Come to You.")

I have an old Star Wars fic I did when I was 12 sort of like the one you described. Luckily I was obsessed with printing things out so it's in my parent's house... SOMEWHERE. (I think that can stay lost though.)

My Spanish class was awesome! My teacher had this thing where she'd tell you to tie your shoe or "you'll trip and fall and die." Or we'd have to pick up that pencil because we'd "trip and fall and die." One of my best friends I still talk to now had her and we still both say that phrase. (I'm actually waiting for an excuse to use it in a Merlin fic.)

ps: check your messages. I may have left you a present on there (although such present will be denied later.)
