Dear Flist, you might think you have read funny things on the internet, but you haven't read this. I think I just hurt myself from laughing.

A hamster in Britain has been recovering after eating a magnet and getting stuck to the metal bars of its cage.

Smurf's owner Kate Meech returned to the family’s home in Bugbrooke, Northampton. with her four children to find the animal attached to the outside of its cage after swallowing the object, which is thought to have come from her 10-year-old son Thomas' Spider-Man figurine.

Kate explained: "When I saw the small circular shape from inside her cheek I realised she was attached by a magnet. It took a bit of a tug to pull her away from it and then we had to keep her in a plastic box, for obvious reasons.

"I’ve warned the children to keep their toys away from the cage from now on.”

You DO come up with the most interesting funny things. I laughed out loud at this and I'll be sharing it with others. I know I don't always comment, but your posts on old book covers and the reviews of bad fiction are always priceless, too.

My mum pointed out this one and after I'd calmed down enough I just had to share it!

Glad you enjoy the book covers too, every now and again I just get the urge to trawl google images for them to amuse myself :D

Expect a private message from me in the next few days with an idea for you. I'm writing this to you now so I commit myself to actually write the message within the next few days.

These news tidbits always freak me out because small children have died from eating those rare earth magnets. Sorry to be Debbie Downer here, but it's one of those triggers for me. I'm glad the hamster just had it in her cheek and was fine, but *shudder*.

Oh, I have to admit I hadn't thought of that, maybe because I'm a gay man with no kids. But you're right about the incidents. As I read it, all I was thinking about was the time the top of the air filter suction tube came off on my work place fish tank at the newspaper I published and I came in to find a gold fish face first in the tube. Panicked, I rushed to turn off the filter and poor Fred floated out, alive but now goggle eyed. I'm happy to report that Fred fully recovered his normal face and lived a long fishy life.

Goggle-eyed?!?! I have never come across that before, poor Fred! My fish Charles used to 'beach' himself on the oxygen plant in the top because he was kind of tubby, I had to give him a little prod every other day or so to move him on again. Otherwise he just lay there looking pathetic (luckily still under water though).

Ha! Now that is a funny story (for me). No fish trauma in my past. No rare earth magnet trauma either, but I always worried about it when my kids were really young.

And yay for the fish surviving, clearly:D

That's ok, I wouldn't have posted it if the hamster hadn't been fine :) They do have a thing for picking up anything. I have an old photo of my first hamster, Bouncer, who'd picked up an old lolly stick and then become stuck because he was trying to carry it in his mouth and the gap he was going through was too narrow!

Heee! That's hilarious! My hamsters never got into such shenanigans. I had one who was an escape artist though. We had to safety pin the little door shut.
