Dear mums on my flist,

You would still love your child if they made you a slightly burned lopsided sponge cake for your birthday and then tried to shore up the subsidence with 500lbs of orange flavoured butter-cream, right? I mean, a mother's love is unconditional and all that :/

Butter cream is an excuse for everything, even lopsidedness. (Not a mum, though.)

:) Well my mum does like buttercream so... ::crosses fingers::

I hope so <3 It was my own fault for constantly opening the oven door, but I was worried it was cooking too fast and then it sank on one side :/ I've dusted the top with icing sugar to cover up the burned bit though.

Buttercream? Did you say buttercream? Who cares about the cake. Move over. I want the buttercream:)

(Honestly, for me, it has to be chocolate, unless it's the home made cinnamon rolls I asked for or maybe that buttery sugary thing that I ate so much of it made me feel a little ill.)

Your mom will LOVE it.

A lot of buttercream... I grated orange into it too to give it some flavour and I've dusted the top with icing sugar to cover the burned bits!

I normally cover my cakes with chocolate, I think this is the first time I haven't actually. Mum got a lot of chocolate for her birthday though so I thought she might prefer something lighter - except with loads of buttercream instead. Oops.

LOL. Well, change is good sometimes too. :)

Well normally I would put chocolate on the top too and make it a chocolate orange cake, but mum was given so much chocolate for her birthday that I thought I would try a lighter cake with just sponge and buttercream. Then I had to use a TON of buttercream so I'm not sure it's much better anyway :/

I did of course do my own washing up :D

I'm so glad to hear Tree Fu Tom was a hit! I was thinking of you when I made the post but I wasn't sure if it might be a bit young for your children or not, I'm not the best judge with children's programmes.

Aww thank you :)

Yes I've been AWOL for ages whilst working on this damn fic. My posting date is the 28th March and I am SO close to the end now. It's grown to 25,000 words though, not sure how that happened. It's just been trying to find time to work on it around Tesco and the archives course. But it's getting there, only one half section to write now and 2 scenes to finish off :)

I'd be thrilled. Especially because it's clearly got loads of special ingredient; love.

Frankly, I'm amazed the mini-thems aren't all over it already.

I wouldn't let the Mini Thems near it after the last cake they 'helped' me with... :/

Mum has seen it now and she approves! :D

I am not a mum, but if someone presented me with that scrumptious looking cake, my first thought would not be "how awfully lopsided it is" ;)

After I'd finished explaining all the ways it went horribly wrong, mum was gracious enough to say it looked delicious! <3

My cakes are always lopsided, I think it's because I can't resist opening the oven doors every 35 seconds to check on them :(

I am not a mother, but frankly that cake looks delicious. Butter-cream is always made of win. Always. Now I'm suddenly really hungry.

I adore buttercream too! I was going to put chocolate on the top but I thought it would be a bit heavy - but then she got a crap ton of buttercream anyway so I think that point was moot... :D

Cake is cake - one has to love anyone who makes them cake.

Extra buttercream is just extra love, really.

That's a good way of looking at it! I shall tell mum I filled the cakey hole with extra love (flavoured with orange zest!) <3

Dad still has a picture I drew when I was 3 on his office wall (and I have never had a shred of artistic talent). You're offering cake, why would your Mum ever not love it?

She did love it in the end, once I'd finished pointing out everything that went wrong with it. I think mum has now accepted that I'm never going to improve in the kitchen department...

Lol. You can never go wrong with butter cream!

Aw, I'm sure she won't mind the lopsidedness! Plus, it looks delicious to me (especially all that cream! Mmmmm!)

In my experience mums don't really care about perfection - it's the thought that counts, as they say :)!

I think its something mums just have to accept quite early on. I remember when I made mum a desk tidy using toilet rolls and kitchen foil - and she was forced to use it for years so as not to hurt my feelings!

AWWWW - but that sounds very sweet to me :)!

Sharing is caring, mom. Tell them you're only having a small piece because you want to save lots to share.

P.S. I promise to stop laughing sometime next week.

I'm a Gay man, so I have no idea how my opinion scores since I'm obviously not a mum. However, I love to cook and taste is primary, looks secondary. The cake sounds delicious. And for myself, I wouldn't mind the burned bits. Sometimes I'll take just plain cake and toast it, and little scorchy bits are actually quite delicious.

Given your cooking expertise, I would say your opinion scores quite highly <3 I have always felt the same way about food. When I was a student I used to make a delicious stew that probably looked quite grim in colour but it was packed full of vegetables and DELICIOUS with warm bread and butter.

Mum seems quite pleased with her cake luckily. Although we did both end up laughing helplessly when I was giving her a blow by blow account of all the ways the damn thing went wrong :D

One of my favorite dishes to make and to eat--and yes, I serve it to guests--is a braised leeks recipe I developed (I often like to create my own recipes) that looks absolutely ghastly. It looks like gray-green goop. But it tastes oh so good. Guests initially take a little tiny bit to be polite, then inevitably go for large seconds.

She was very grateful for it, in the end :D I pointed out all the dodgy bits though, just so she knew what she was letting herself in for! I think she has accepted I will never be a cook, and she can always scrape out some of the 2 inch thick buttercream... :/
